This course provides an overall introduction to environmental health concepts. Topics such as regulatory controls, pollutants’ sources, fates, and impacts in environmental media (air, water, food, and soil) and occupational settings are addressed. Human hazard recognition, evaluation, and management are introduced in terms of toxicology, epidemiology, exposure assessment, prevention, risk assessment, and emergency response.
This module provides an introduction to aspects of public health that are important for creating policies that positively impact population health. It includes an understanding of public health and the determinants of health, how to assess the health of the public, methods of intervention, how to use evidence in public health policy-making, and how to evaluate the implementation of health policy from a public health perspective.
This module covers the burden of illness and causes of CVD and Diabetes, and the evidence base and methods of planing interventions to reduce the growing burden on developing country populations.
The focus of the module will be on the evaluation of a range of policy and programmatic interventions, all of which have the ambition of improving health outcomes. Interventions may be preventive, curative, behavioural, inter-sectoral interventions (that may simultaneously focus on multiple sectors including, for example, improved water, health services, and education), and also routine health services, such as primary health care.
The dissertation aims to enable students to synthesize the previous parts of their learning experience, build on their experience, and use skills and knowledge to develop, critically assess, and evaluate a potential solution to a locally relevant public health problem. Each student will be assigned an academic supervisor allocated according to the concentration chosen by the student and the area of expertise of the facilitators. Each student will be expected to produce a systematic literature review, a research project design, and a reflective essay.

This module in Public Health Ethics aims to provide students with the skills needed to think and act ethically in Public Health through introducing ethical theory and frameworks. Ethical issues general to public health provision will be explored in order to enable students to apply ethical concepts and theories to a range of contemporary debates.
